My Phone Interview

Right after applying to the Disney College Program, on February 9th, I got a ‘Thank You for Applying’ email. I was thrilled and was awaiting to receive an invitation for a Phone Interview (PI) soon after that. Normally after the ‘Thank you’ email, Disney invites you to complete a Web Based Interview (WBI) first, but since I passed mine last Fall I was not asked to do it again because it is only required once a year. (A WBI is pretty much a timed quiz that asks you as series of personality and work related questions to see if you’d be a good fit for Disney.) I went ahead and scheduled my PI for February 19th, 10 days later! Ah!:( I was hopping to take it sooner then that, but there were only 2 dates available at the time. I scheduled it for the evening so I would be able to take it when I got home from work, but luckily I was fortunate enough to have that day off being that work was so slow.

The good thing about having 10 days before your interview is having time to prepare and practice! I had already rehearsed and rehearsed so much last time that I had pretty much still remembered all my answers to the questions. This was actually a blessing because now that I knew what I wanted to say, I could focus on coming off as genuine and more myself. I didn’t really practice the first couple of days because I knew that if I did, I’d be a nerves wreck. When my interview was inching closer and closer, I went back to my Word Document where I had typed up all my Q&A’s from last time and read over them. I found that some of my answers didn’t really flow off the tongue or maybe weren’t quite what Disney was looking for. I decided to copy and paste the questions and answer them again so I could make this interview newer, fresher, more personal- especially since I had worked 5 months at a new job since my last interview.

Last time I had focused so much of my time on the ‘maybe’ Q&A’s but this time I decided to focus my preparation on the definite questions I knew they were going to ask. As you can assume, “Why do you want to do the Disney College Program” was the question I had spend the most time on. This might sound easy to most people but, “because I love the company” or “because I love going to Disneyland,” are definitely not the answers they are looking for. Millions of people love the company and visiting the parks, needless to say, you need a much more thorough, thought out answer. Something that really shows your dedication and passion. Something you can get your finger prints all over and really make it your own.

After editing and revising my answer numerous times, I had finally come to decision on how I wanted to portray to my interviewer why I wanted to do the Disney College Program and why it was so important to me. I practiced what I wanted to say pretty much at every free opportunity. Last Fall my mom and brother had helped me with some ‘mock interviews’ which is pretty much just pretending like you’re really interviewing on the phone. That helped me out a lot, but I didn’t want to ‘rehearse’ this time so we just casually went over my answers in person to make sure they sounded good.

The time had come. All of my months of research, practicing, and praying had led up to this. It was a Wednesday and I had school that afternoon. Thankfully I knew I didn’t need the class anymore since I was changing my major, so my excitement and anticipation wasn’t really disturbing me from my class work. (You might be wondering why I hadn’t dropped the class yet if I didn’t need it. Well, you need to be enrolled in a college class to apply to the DCP, so I remained in the class so I could be sure that that wasn’t hindering me from getting accepted.) Once class was over I rushed home and spent the day practicing for my interview.

It was that time. Disney tells you that your interviewer can call anywhere between 15 minutes before or 15 minutes after your scheduled time. This being extremely important and all, I had everything ready for me to start my interview right at 7pm (15 mins before my scheduled time). I literally had everything you could think of there: my cheat-sheet, my positive note card reminders, my questions, a pencil, water, kleenex, chapstick. Yeah- I was serious. I sat there relaxing so I wouldn’t be nervous when the phone rang and calmly glazed over my notes one last time. I wanted this interview to be totally different then my last two. From 7-7:16 I sat there smiling to get my excited and pumped up about the company and the interview.

My home phone rang! My interviewers name was Nina. She seemed kind of bored and drained from the day. No magic in her voice. Sure she was nice, but I was kind of nervous on this interview going south because what if she didn’t laugh at my jokes? What if we didn’t connect? What if she strictly asks the questions without a nice, bubbly conversation? Yes, all these questions were going through my mind in a matter of seconds. Thankfully when I said ‘Aw, Nina, that’s cute!” she gave a slight giggle. Victory! I kind of felt like I broke through. It was all smooth sailing from there. I mean, how would you feel if you had a hundred interviews in one day… on the phone. Yeah, I don’t blame her.

From my last two interviews I thought I knew the format and order it kind of goes in. Nope. Because pretty much right away she asked me why I wanted to do the DCP. It through me off guard. Wasn’t she suppose to go over my roles of interest first? It must have been because I was open to ANYTHING. Anyways, I only had a second to get myself together. “…Because… *clears throat*…I really want to do the Disney College Program because…” I had to show my confidence. NAILED IT! I got that answer out of the way and it was all down hill from there (in a good way). Nina continued to ask me questions that I had prepared for and I didn’t even get any difficult ones- HAZAH! It was seriously so relaxing and fun compared to my last two. I remained smiling the whole time (something that is a necessity since they can hear it in your voice) and maintained calm, cool, and collected.

Our interview was ending and it was just about 25 minutes long. She asked if I had any questions and I asked her the 3 that I had prepared. My last one was regarding her personal experience with the company and how she got started with Disney. She started to tell me about her first affiliations with Disney and then… silence. Yep, my phone died. I started freaking out! I ran to the living room phone to see if the line was still connected but it was too late. The call had been dropped, there was nothing I could do. It took me a second to realize- there’s still a chance! I had forgotten about my cell phone and how I silenced it. I ran back to my room and flipped it over- it was ringing! I picked up and started apologizing explaining how my phone had died. She was nice about it and said it was fine, she explained how the interview was technically over but wanted to know if I had anymore questions. I told her I didn’t but unfortunately didn’t get to hear the ending to her story. She finished it up and we got a few good laughs in!:) I thanked her for her time and that was it!

Everything was in Disney’s hands now. I did all I could do and that would have to be good enough. The only thing else I could give is my soul (which I learned from the Little Mermaid is NOT a good trade lol). My heart was already poured into the company and I think that showed during my interview. If I didn’t get in this time, I honestly don’t know what I would have to do the next time. From the wise words of Walt himself, “Why worry? If you’ve done the very best you can, worrying won’t make it any better.” So then I just had to wait.

Here are the emails I received:)

Why Custodial?

I’m sure a lot of people feel sorry for me when I say I got the role of Custodial or say “Eww, you want to be a janitor?” Well let me clear this up, I’m so happy and excited I got custodial! It was actually my first pick!

I think it’s actually kind of funny, because when I applied to the DCP the first 3 times, I put ‘no interest’ under Custodial. I thought that this role was the lowest, worst, and most undesirable role in the DCP. After doing my research, I found out that this role in fact has the most guest interaction and pretty much everyone who got this role, loved it and did not regret accepting the role!

Here are a few reasons why I choose Custodial as my number one choice:
1. It has the most guest interaction. Sure I have to clean the bathrooms and do the trash, but that’s only part of my shift. Custodians are the most available cast member to answer guests’ questions and start up conversations with them. If you think about it, I’ll pretty much be traveling “Guest service booth.”
2. The other part is just freely walking around talking to guests as I sweep up the streets. This is the only role that you actually get to roam around in your area, not be on a strict time limit, and are not constantly supervised (of course I’ll have bathroom checks and trash runs, but that doesn’t consume the whole shift).
3. I will get to pin trade! Yay, I love pins (but not as much as I love Vinylmations), and getting the opportunity to interact with guests and helping beget magical experiences will be so much fun! I know I like going up to cast members to pin trade, and now I’ll be at the other end of this experience!
4. I will get to do water art! If you’ve never heard of this, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It’s a new thing that Disney has started where Custodial cast members take a broom and water and draw Disney characters on the street for guests! It’s like putting on a little show<3 and I even get to have guests participate in this magical experience!
5. I get to make the park look sparkly clean!:D I take pride in my work and I love making sure everything is clean, organized, and perfect. I want to make sure that the first guest in the park and the last guest in the park get to experience the same cleanliness. There should be no reason why the park should look messy at the end of the day, and I’m so happy that I get to assure that!

Here’s an awesome video showing you exactly what I’ll be doing as Custodial in Disneyland!:)

What is the Disney College Program?

The Disney College Program (DCP) is a paid internship in either Anaheim, CA at Disneyland (DLR) or in Orlando, FL at Disney World (WDW). You not only get to work at one of the Disney Parks, but you get the opportunity to take classes offered at Disney- for college credit! How cool is that? And you get other amazing opportunities such as networking with people who work for the company, making friends within the program from all over the country, getting to tour different areas of the park that are normally blocked off to guests, getting to ride/tour attractions with the lights on/off, getting to learn things that normal people wouldn’t know about the company, and getting to hear people high up in the company speak in the classes. I don’t know about you, but I would be just fine doing this program for free with all of those amazing opportunities. But no need, because on top of all that- Disney pays you!

This program occurs 2 times a year, in the Spring and in the Fall. The length differs on what time of year you go and which program you are accepted to. For instance, there is Spring, Spring Advantage, Fall, Fall Advantage for Disney World and Spring Advantage, Fall, and Fall Advantage for Disneyland. Spring Advantage is from mid January to mid August. Spring is from mid January to mid May. Fall Advantage is from late May/June to early January. Fall is from late August to early January.

You get the option of living in provided housing (pretty close to the parks) or locally which you’d have to find you’re own place to stay. WDW is much cheaper when it comes to housing at about $200-300 and DLR at about $800-900. Yikes, I know! But to me, it’s definitely worth it. I’ve never lived away from home and this new experience is so intriguing to me and I’m very excited for it! I will even be able to pick my roommates before the program starts if I want (via the DCP facebook group) and I’ll be meeting so many people who share the same love for Disney as me!

You might think this is kind of a waste of time for those who’s major has nothing to do with the roles (jobs) Disney offers, but if anything, this program looks amazing on your resume. Don’t think that having a past with Disney won’t help you land that dream job of yours. Companies know that Disney trains people exceptionally well and I’m sure they’ll think that if Disney hired you, then maybe they should hire you too (I’ve heard a few personal stories about this from people). Also, you’ll learn how to interact with different kind of people and how to problem solve in a big company! There are SO many life skills that you can benefit and learn from in this internship! It won’t hurt you (too bad haha) to take 1 semester off of college for the program, especially since you could earn credits anyways (and you can take online classes if you wish). Some people even wait until their last semester of college to apply so they can just do it right after they graduate (you must be enrolled in college in order to apply though). Every time I’ve heard someone talk about their past DCP experience, they have said nothing but great and positive things. People report that this program is life changing and the best experience of their lives. And who knows, you might just fall in love with working for the company and want to stay on- I mean hey, they do accept pretty much every degree out there! You can potentially find your dream career within the Disney Company; this is the opportunity to get your foot in the door!

I paid my fees and received my arrival date and time! Yippie!

ACCEPTED!

I’ve been accepted! Ahhh! I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and it has finally come.

As you might know, I haven’t always wanted to work for Disney (well yes, in my dreams, but not as a realistic career option), but I’ve recently decided that I no longer want to pursue Dental Hygiene anymore, like I have in the past. Ever since I was little, it was always my dream to be a pediatric Hygienist, but since I’ve gotten hands on experience in a Dental office for the past 6 months, I’ve realized that I want to do bigger and better things. Not that Dental Hygiene is a bad career, but it is definitely not for me and I can’t see myself in a dental office my whole life. Sitting in one spot, not being able to carry on a conversation with people while I work, and working with a small team of coworkers in such a small place is unappealing to me.

This is how I decided I wanted to pursue Disney as a career and how I got into the Disney College Program.

I’ve always been a Disnerd (Disney nerd) and a fanatic of the company, so it was obvious to me that when I found out about this Disney College Program I would apply right away (no matter what my major was). I first applied in Fall of 2011 when I was a freshman in college. I barely knew anything about the program but I knew it would be an amazing opportunity! I mean, come on- it’s Disney! I applied pretty late and wasn’t given the opportunity to have a Web-Based-Interview (WBI), but I wasn’t too heart broken about it, because I knew I could apply again in the spring. So spring came around and I applied as soon as the applications came out. I not only got a WBI, but a Phone Interview (PI) as well! I was very excited, but I hardly prepared (at the time I didn’t think it was really necessary). Little did I know, it is very necessary to prepare and do research because a couple days later I got a “No Longer In Consideration” (NLIC) email. I was truly bummed  because I thought the interview went well since my interviewer was so nice and friendly and practically laughed at and agreed with everything I said. Turns out, they do that for pretty much everyone haha.

I’m a strong believer in fate and God’s will. Shortly after being NLIC’d, my dad past away. I know God didn’t let me be accepted into the Disney College Program (DCP), because I wouldn’t have been able to handle leaving my family right after that huge milestone in our lives. I thought that was my last opportunity to apply to the DCP since I needed to finish up my prerequisites for Dental Hygiene. The next year (Fall 2013) I saw on the DCP facebook page that applications were out again and since (I thought) I’d be done with my prerequisites, I decided  to go ahead and apply again for Spring 2014. This time I REALLY prepared for my PI. I actually over prepared (I think) because I didn’t get in… again. I sounded too rehearsed- I literally memorized all my answers and didn’t sound genuine enough. I was wait-listed so I obviously did something right, but I never actually got accepted. I thought this was my time. I joined the facebook group and made roommate arrangements, became good friends with people, and even flew out to Washington to meet my future roommate, Danika. Even though I didn’t get accepted, I at least made really great friends and got a ‘practice round’ out of it for next time.

I was very determined to apply (in Spring 2014) and get accepted for the DCP of Fall 2014, so even before applications came out I practiced, practiced, practiced! It was about the 3rd week of January that it kind of dawned on me that I didn’t really have the passion or interest for the dental field anymore. Because I was so focused on the DCP, I noticed that Disney is where I want my future. I didn’t know what I would change my major to, but I knew where I would start and figure out my calling- DISNEYLAND. I applied on February 9th, 2 days after applications came out and had my PI on the 19th. This was the first time that I applied to both parks (Disneyland and Disney World) and the first time I was receptive to EVERY role. I put a preference in Disneyland Resort (DLR), but I knew that I would rather work in Walt Disney World (WDW) and work any role, then not work for Disney at all. I definitely wanted  to practice and be prepared, but at the same time, I wanted to sound very genuine and natural. I had my interview and a week and a half later, I got accepted on March 1st! I was so happy and relieved. All my hard work and determination had finally paid off! I know that God had a plan for me even though it was hard to accept. I believe I was accepted AFTER I realized I didn’t want to pursue Dental Hygiene, so I could take the program more seriously and professional- like so I could focus on where I want to be within the company.

I really want to take a hold of all the opportunities presented so I can really work my way up in the company. This program offers networking, classes (that even count as credit towards my degree), personal attention from mangers/teachers, and so much more! I’m beyond blessed and grateful for being offered the position of Custodial (my first choice!) at Disneyland (only about 300 participants are accepted) for Fall 2014 (Aug 20th -Jan 5th). It’s funny how we think we know which path we’re going to take and what our future will look like, but in actuality, only He knows:)

And if you’ve made it this far, THANK YOU! I know it’s a long post hahah
